Senarica

Senarica is the small mountain village of Abruzzo that boasts of having received the freedom of self-government from Queen Joanna I of Anjou. The village was in fact proclaimed a Republic of the Kingdom around the mid-15th century, with the protection of the Most Serene Republic of Venice.

Truth or legend? What is certain, given the evidence reported in historical documents, is that Senarica was one of the most important centers of Abruzzo Ulteriore in times gone by.

Another source of pride for this beautiful village is the 70 hectares of centuries-old chestnut grove that extends at its feet and produces the prized product that the Senarica people call "Lu 'Nzite," one of the best qualities of chestnuts in all of central Italy, to which the "Senarica Chestnut Festival" is dedicated, held every year during the 3rd or 4th week of October.
