Calderone

Famous for being considered Europe's southernmost glacier, Calderone is located on the northern slope of the Corno Grande del Gran Sasso. It is fed mainly by the snow that accumulates there during the winter, by avalanches that fall from the rocky slopes surrounding the glacier, and by snow transported by the action of the wind.

At its highest point, the glacier is 2,867 m above sea level, while its lowest point is approximately 2,676 m above sea level. Horizontally, its maximum length is 390 m. The glacier's external characteristics are constantly changing, and it often happens that even in the same season, the Calderone can present different aspects of its conformation.

To visit it, you need to take the path that from Prati di Tivo leads first to Vallone delle Cornacchie and then to Rifugio Franchetti, from where the path leads to the glacier.
