Il Corno Piccolo
"What a white, steep barrier
The Piccolo Corno rises
Adorned with straight towers,
Banded with mystery;
With nails and with rope
Fascinating walls
Oh fearful cliffs
We will conquer you..."
From the book “Aquilotti del Gran Sasso”
At 2655 m above sea level, the elegant Corno Piccolo stands out, separated from the “Grande Corno” from the Sella dei Due Corni and the Vallone delle Cornacchie. In the entire Apennines, it is one of the very few peaks reserved almost exclusively for mountaineers and climbers and a few expert hikers equipped with all the appropriate technical equipment to attempt the summit.
Its smooth and compact limestone walls offer a variety of climbing routes among the most fascinating in the world and of all levels of difficulty. Making the ascent easier are two of the most beautiful via ferratas in central Italy: the Ventricini and the Danesi. There is also a Normal Route, by no means trivial and not to be underestimated, which allows even less experienced but well-equipped hikers to ascend. Definitely not to be undertaken in case of uncertain weather, when strong summer storms can suddenly break out in the high mountains.
