Pietracamela

The village lies at 1,005 meters above sea level at the foot of the Corno Piccolo (2,655 meters) and Corno Grande (2,912 meters) of the Gran Sasso d'Italia, the highest peak in the Apennines.

Pietracamela is a small gem named among the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy." Its first inhabitants were most likely from Brindisi or Puglia, generally shepherds or wool carders associated with the transhumance. From 1526, the village's history was linked to that of the Sicilian Valley (Kingdom of Naples). Its original name was certainly Petra, which derives from the fact that the houses were built on enormous boulders carried down to the valley by the melting glaciers of Campo Pericoli; but others believe the name derives from the large camel-shaped rock that towers over the houses.

Pietracamela is an excellent place to stop for a few days' vacation, immersed in nature and dedicated to mountain sports.

Visitors will also find places where they can enjoy excellent local products and exclusive dishes from the Pretarola cuisine, such as appetizers with celery and cacio marcetto cheese, the famous scrippelle mbusse, certain cured meats, and pecorino alla callara.
