Fano Adriano

Fano Adriano is a municipality of 304 inhabitants in the Province of Teramo. The town is located within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.

It is a picturesque mountain village located at the foot of the Gran Sasso d'Italia massif, within the Gran Sasso-Monti della Laga National Park. This small town, immersed in magnificent natural scenery, boasts the ancient parish church of San Pietro as its most valuable monument in the historic center. The interior houses a beautiful wooden ceiling, a splendid 17th-century wooden high altar in Baroque style, likely the work of Carlo Riccioni from Atri, and a valuable organ built in 1756 by the renowned organ builder Adriano Fedri, also from Atri.

The historic village of Fano Adriano likely arose on the ruins of an ancient Roman settlement, located along the Via Cecilia, a famous road that connected the Abruzzo region with Rome. It also followed the fate of the Sicilian Valley until the unification of Italy. The origins of the name are uncertain, although the word Fano certainly derives from the Latin "fanum," meaning temple.

About 15 kilometers from the village is Cerqueto, the only hamlet of Fano Adriano, presumably founded during the period of the Barbarian invasions.

In Fano Adriano, you can taste excellent local products and traditional mountain dishes from the Teramo area, such as scurpella, chickpeas and chestnuts, acquacotta with voliche, and Easter omelette.
