Castelli

Beneath the high "Walls" of Mount Camicia lies one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy: Castelli.

The town, reachable in about an hour and twenty minutes from Prati di Tivo, enjoys international fame thanks to the art and craftsmanship of ceramics. In fact, in Castelli, unlike other mountain towns in the "Sicilian Valley," over time a society emerged that was different from the agro-pastoral one. It was more dynamic socially and economically and strongly focused on the production and marketing of ceramics, thanks to the presence of clay deposits and wood useful for fueling the kilns.

Today, the town represents a point of excellence in quality of the entire Abruzzo region and is characterized mainly by the presence of small artisan workshops, ceramic shops, and works of art on display in the town's narrow streets.

We recommend visiting the Ceramics Museum and the small Church of San Donato, nicknamed the "Sistine Chapel of Majolica" thanks to its entirely majolica-tiled ceiling.
