The Ash Grove of Valle Vaccaro

The Frassineto di Valle Vaccaro is located in the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Crognaleto. Despite its location close to the tiny village, its exploitation has not been carried out for about fifty years. This has allowed the development of large trees with trunks over a meter in circumference, among which the common ash species dominates, accompanied by sycamore maple, hop hornbeam, beech and chestnut, cherry, elm, lime, beech, and common juniper.

The Frassineto di Valle Vaccaro is unique in Italy, as it is rare to find woodlands with the predominance of these species. Even from a wildlife point of view, the ash grove, thanks to the presence of deadwood, offers an ideal habitat for birds such as the lesser spotted woodpecker and the white-backed woodpecker, which prefer to nest in these places.
